Modern trends in the global banking market

Abstract. The article identifies and describes the modern trends in the global banking market. Based on the analysis and evaluation of the current state of the banking market, the author defined major general trends that determine the development of the global banking market over the past 10-20 years and which remain unchanged inspite the influence of the global financial crisis of 2007-2009. These trends are: universalization, internationalization, transnationalization, globalization and institutionalization of banking. At the same time the author has found narrower and less continuous trends which appearance was caused mainly by the deployment of the crisis 2007-2009. They are: reduction in the presence of foreign banks in the domestic markets of individual countries, shift of the presence of foreign banks from developed countries in favor of developing countries, the growth of bank deposit funding, changes in business models of global banks, functional diversification, and growth of banking services provided through the Internet. Generally, in most countries the volume of bank assets and capital has exceeded pre-crisis level, indicating the recovery of the growing trend in the global banking market.
