Internationalization of Ukraine’s universities research activity: foreign students mobility

Abstract. Introduction. In the age of globalization and intellectualization of the world economy, the national economies exposure is understood as a planned integration of the countries into the scientific and research interspace on the basis of their own strategy of internationalization. Taking into account the actuality of the given issue for Ukraine, the purpose of the present article is a disclosure of the practical aspects of internationalization of research universities activity in Ukraine within dynamic mobility of foreign students.

Results. Ukraine comprises only one percent of the global market of educational services. The flow of foreign students into Ukraine is provided mainly by developing countries and countries with transitive economies. When entering the universities, foreign students do not pass exams – they are enrolled according to the results of the interview and they study on the contract (commercial) basis.

The share of foreign students in the total number of the research universities’ students of Ukraine is negligible in comparison with the figures of the European and American universities. The major part of the foreign students is accumulated in the universities of Kharkiv and Kyiv cities. Increase in the number of foreign students is not accompanied with the adequate improvement of the skill level of academic staff.

In common practice, foreign students study in the faculties of Philology, Management and Legal Sciences of Ukraine’s universities, where the powerful schools of sciences have not been established yet. The number of foreigners wishing to take Master’s courses at research universities is decreasing.

Conclusion. Investigation of the practical aspects of research universities’ activities in Ukraine reveals the vagueness of foreign students’ mobility process. Considering the given aspect as an evidence of uncertainty of the national strategy of the higher education internationalization, the author investigated and assumed the main barriers in the mobility enhancement of foreign students and provided the recommendations for their elimination in the mid-term and long-term perspective.
