Economic activity of population in Subcarpathian region under empirical research

Abstract. Introduction. One of the main things that reflect the economic situation in countries or regions is the market, particularly the labour market. It serves as a barometer indicating the directions and trends for the short and medium terms. Moreover, it is the basis for the correction of the decisions that are being made. Therefore, it stands in the centre of interest of many economists and business practitioners, who are analyzing the mechanism for unemployment reduction and measures of economic activity in the Polish labour market and in separate Polish regions.

The main purpose of this article is to present the situation on the labour market in Subcarpathian Voivodeship during the 2011-2014 period. Its first part shows the essence of the theory of economic activity. The next section presents the general characteristics of the labour market in Subcarpathian Voivodeship against Polish background. The article ends with a brief summary of this research.

Methods. The methods used in this research are based on descriptive statistics (tabular description and graphic presentation of research results). The study includes the basic indicators describing the Subcarpathian labour market supply and its impact on the demand side, i.e. the rate of professional activity, the rate of employment and the rate of unemployment. However, special attention is focused on the analysis of the level of unemployment in Subcarpathian Voivodeship conducted in the present research paper, which is justified by the fact that the rate of unemployment is the most essential rate describing the scale and range of disparity on the labour market.

Results and Conclusion. An unveiled discussion and analysis of the results of empirical studies shows that women, young people and people with low professional qualifications are in the worst situation on the labour market. In the instant case, it is essential to focus our attention on the improvement of skills within a job-seeking period, which becomes possible by taking part in various trainings and voluntary service through apprenticeships or internships. This can help individuals to maintain their professional attractiveness on the labour market. We should take action to support the theoretical aspect of education with the possibility of practical training, considering that work experience is required by almost all employers. It is also significant to promote employment and to counteract the negative effects of unemployment among young people as well as breaking the cliches about social and professional roles of women and men.
